A Bloody Good Western - Tarantino Style

By now, you should know what to expect when coming in to a Quentin Tarantion film: snappy dialogue, awesome music, gobs of blood and (lately) history turned on its ear. Django Unchained takes a classic spaghetti western, mixes it with an action/revenge theme - along with many memorable and excellent characters - and the result is a film that oozes cool while remaining true to its roots.
We start off with a long tracking shot of a group of slaves - one of whom, Django (Jamie Foxx), is of great interested to fellow German traveler Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz). He wastes no time in haggling over price before things turn sour. Then we learn that Dr. Schultz is a cold-blooded bounty hunter - which is good for Django, not so good for the Speck slaver brothers who were hauling …

Django Unchained (2012) Set in the South in 1858, Django (Jamie Foxx), a former slave who has turned bounty hunter, with the help of his partner, Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), look for Django’s long lost wife, Hildy (Kerry Washington). They find her on Calvin Candie's (Leonardo DiCaprio) plantation, where the main sport is slaves fighting to the death. I loved the first 45 minutes of this film, which is part comedy, part spaghetti western (western films made in the 60’s/70’s in Italy). Waltz and Foxx play off each other extremely well, as Dr. Schultz teaches Django the finer points of bounty hunting. But the film bogs down when DiCaprio’s character enters the picture, as there is quite a bit of sitting around dinner tables and porches, talking about slavery. Samuel L. …

Django is Loads of fun

In a way Django Unchained is the unofficial sequel to Inglorious Bastards. Many of the same themes are present. Tarantino takes us to a time were a single group is constantly being wronged (in Django it is the blacks and in Inglorious Bastards it is the Jews) then turns the tables on the people who are persecuting them.
Tarantino has not made a great movie since Reservoir Dogs. Since the new millennium started he seems to only make over the top parodies of himself, trying a new genre every time. He just does not seem to be pushing the boundaries cinematically anymore. He only pushes the boundaries were good taste is concerned.
That said I found Django to be incredibly entertaining, and even laugh out loud funny in places. I’d say it is a must see for anyone who is a …

Quentin Tarantino knocks it out of the park once again with Django Unchained, a funny, stylish, and gritty western that is also one of the more enjoyable films of the year. It may not be an instant Tarantino classic like Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds, but Django Unchained is one hell of a wild ride. Last year, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was labeled "The Feel Bad Movie Of Christmas." This Christmas, Django Unchained might just be deserving of that tagline.
You simply can not walk into a Tarantino film without expecting a few things - lots of style, lots of laughs, LOTS of blood, lots of killer foreplay, and lots of cool music.
