Citizen Kane

Orson Welles / United States of America / 1941... When any film critic puts such terms into one single sentence, the inevitable memory that instantly pops up into the mind is arguably the best American film ever made: Citizen Kane. To make a review and a deep analysis of such giant icon may inevitably cause the writer to resort to terms like "best", "greatest", "influential", and "landmark". However, to resort to such words is the most truthful and factual reaction any cinema admirer normally experiences. Citizen Kane is one of the greatest films in the history of the motion picture. Without the creation of this gigantic magnum opus, the history of the art of filmmaking would not be the same nowadays. A statement comparing the influence of Citizen Kane over cinema and the influence of …

there is a reason it is called one of the greatest

This is the movie that formed the modern day Oscar-bait. I mean that in that every other movie you see trying to get a best picture nomination is taking chunks from Citizen Kane. And for good reason, this movie is considered to be one of the greatest if not the greatest movie ever made, the academy probably agrees with that statement.

I personally totally get its “greatest movie of all time” status, because it’s super-awesome. The cinematography, the acting and especially the script are just amazing.
There really wasn’t a movie like this before Citizen Kane. Now-a-day’s we get a character study told in retrospective every other year (examples being The Iron Lad, J. Edgar and Slumdog Millionaire,) and even after all this time Kane is unrivaled.

There’s not even that much I …

"Citizen Kane" by Yojimbo

A reporter researching the final words of newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane interviews those closest to him to try and gain some insight into the man for his obituary piece. Citizen Kane is a masterpiece. The very fact that it was Welles' debut makes it all the more so, and I can only assume that his inexperience meant that he didn't realise that this film could not be done. So he just went and did it. It's the first true marriage of art and mainstream cinema, and so many of the techniques used here had never even been dreamed of in populist movie making before; the expressionistic use of lighting, naturalistic dialogue in which characters are constantly interrupting and talking over one another, the use of a variety of lenses and composite shots to achieve the perfect composition …

Citizen Kane review

The story of Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles), a wealthy insecure and vain entrepreneur longing for love. Newsreel reporter Jerry Thompson (William Alland) tries to unveil the personality and life of Charles. His failed marriages (Emily Monroe Norton - Ruth Warrick/Susan Alexander - Dorothy Comingore) and friendship with Jedediah Leland (Joseph Cotten) were represented. The line's alone make this a gem: Charles Foster Kane – “If I don't look after the interests of the underprivileged, maybe somebody else will, maybe somebody without any money or property...and that would be too bad!” “I don't think there's one word that can describe a man's life.” “Rosebud.” Jedediah Leland – “It's the greatest curse that's ever been inflicted on the human race: memory.” “…Guess all he really …

Orsen Welles wear many hats and succeeds!

This was brilliant and compelling from start to finish, The Plot was original, The Acting was superb, The Storytelling was brilliant, The Character development was great, The Script was intelligently written and the twist at the end was heartbreaking and unpredictable and it hasn't aged one bit even when it is almost 70 years old. This film is perfect and its quite funny to think that the film ranked #1 Greatest film of all time was written, directed and stared in by a 26 Year old. I won't give too much away but the film is about a newspaper tycoon (Orsen Welles) has just died and his death circumvented the globe and a group of news reporters attempt to find out what his final utterance meant: Rosebud. Its a really sad and beautiful film because despite Kane was shallow and narcissistic …

Not the greatest film of all time

Lulu1220 - wrote on 02/02/2009

I hear that this is one of the favorite movies of all time from movie critics. Reading some of the reviews on here show that the general public likes it too.

I had to watch this movie in a film class in college. It is one of the most boring movies I have ever seen. My teacher raved on and on about how great of a movie it is and why. Sorry..I just don't feel that way.

One reviewer on here said this is one of the most overrated films of all time - I agree.

I know someone that insulted me because I did not like this film. They said I should like it because so many critics love it and so do many others. Ironically, this person has never seen it.

Now if others have actually seen this movie and really love it, then that is fine. We all have different tastes. We like and dislike …

A classic, wonderfully shot movie

What is "Rosebud"? That is what a news reporter is in search for, but all he finds is more questions about "Charles Foster Kane" (Orson Welles), who uttered that now-famous word just before he died.

"Citizen Kane" is possibly the greatest movie when it comes to cinematography. It uses unusual angles, shadows and long shots wonderfully. The way audio and editing is also what makes this movie standout from others.

The acting was just as good as the cinematography. It is Welles performance that stands out the most. The other actors also do an outstanding job, but none are as good as Welles.

If you are into old movies, this is one of the "Must See" movies. It is also worth checking out if you ever come across it at your local rental place.

An amazing piece of Timeless Art

Tino - wrote on 05/21/2008

This is one of the greatest masterpieces of American cinema history, and it is so for a reason. Citizen Kane is the type of picture that leaves you, almost too suddenly, yet its perfect. You find yourself completely satisfied, and yet, you just can't get enough. Citizen Kane is a revolutionary picture, that probably started the intense tales of men, who worked for everything they had, got it all, and then lost it. It's stronger then any true biopic to date. Orson Welles, was truly a genius. How he could have written something so amazing and thought-provoking, as well as star in and direct it is surely mind-numbing. It is the sort of thing that is too magnificent to be real, yet completely believable. There are other films that follow the same type of 'plot-line' (if there really is one …
