Goonies with Sci-Fi

Super 8 started, what seemed like 2 years ago, with trailers that made me wanting more. They kept this type of atmosphere and anxiety pretty much right up until the movie came out. Which was very smart. I don't like going into a movie having already seen many of the scenes and knowing much of the story. Super 8 kept it in the dark, and it makes it a much better movie. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting, it followed a group of kids along their experience, much like the Goonies (in my opinion). The sci-fi of an unknown alien creature worked, and not showing the creature for a large part of the movie kept me on the edge of my seat and also makes the movie much better. J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg know what they are doing. This movie could very well be the best movie for 2011.

While it pushes the sentimentality a bit too far, for the most part this love-letter to sci-fi B-movies and early 80s Spielbergian entertainment is the perfect cure to mindless blockbusters.

Super 8 benefits from having an exceptionally talented young cast. Elle Fanning is the one girl in the group of boys, Alice Dainard, and …
