This is a desperate movie - a movie that is built around fear, survival, and bleak circumstances. The characters are all intricately-realized and memorable, particularly a star-making performance by Jennifer Lawrence in the lead role. Although the film ends with the tiniest of glimmers of hope, it's a thought-provoking and generally morose film.

A strong film helped by the performance of Jennifer Lawrence. It's a very bleak movie to watch, almost like watching a movie like Frozen River, in which you see the poorest of the poor doing everything they can to survive. In this case it involves a 17 year old trying to track down her drug dealing father in order to keep her family together. A dark world involving meth dealers, shady cops, and the elements are explored here. Lawrence is certainly the standout, as she's in nearly every scene and you can totally feel her character's struggle.

A solid drama and I can see why this won some awards at the film festivals. I could see this get an Oscar or two. Good direction, well paced and a solid, original story for once. It was not the most interesting movie and it was not dramatized enough for me. Still good enough for most drama lovers.
