Neil Blomkamp begins his silver screen career with a helping hand from “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson who delivers a new twist on the sci-fi genre. Both were in the production of a film adaptation of the video game “Halo” but because of lack of financing, “District 9” was made and “Halo” put on hold.
South Africa’s own Blomkamp directs and writes along with Terri Tatchell “District 9”, a groundbreaking alien adventure which grossed a huge £2,288,378 in its opening weekend in the UK. Not only has it made much more than other blockbusters this past summer up to now, it has been given a great reception by the critics and no wonder, this tense heart wrenching pulls you in from the start and never lets go.
Blomkamp and Tatchell divert from the traditional …

District 9, a Mr. E Movie Review

(Run time: 112 min. - Directed by: Neill Blomkamp - Starring: Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope, Nathalie Boltt)

Ok, I got to say it...District 9 lived up to the hype! Usually all the build up of a movie means you need to get ready for a serious let down, but that's just not the case here. District 9 really is a cool and entertaining approach to the whole alien experience. I think this Peter Jackson produced and Neill Blompkamp written and directed film should and probably will end up nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.

When Aliens arrive on Earth they hover their giant ship over Johannesburg, South Africa. Then, once there, they make no attempt at further contact until international pressure forces a crew sent up to the ship to cut into it. Inside …

DISTRICT 9 – Horror Should Be So Good

Mr. E Horror - wrote on 09/05/2009

I realize that District 9 isn’t technically a horror film, and I may not be staying true to my blog’s genre by reviewing it, but it needs to be done. District 9 is able to instill the type of terror that only the best horror films can. The reason that this movie is so important right now is that horror films are really dropping the ball. In general, the industry is so in love with remakes, CGI, and soulless PG-13 fare that much of the thinking has gone out of the genre. District 9 does for science fiction what Dawn of the Dead did for horror 30+ years ago. Neill Blomkamp has made a truly thought-provoking film with a touch every bit as humanistic as Romero at his greatest.

9 offers more than just the run-of-the-mill social commentary on the differences between humans and the …

Not A Typical Sci Fi Movie...A Must See

Roseybaby - wrote on 09/04/2009

I found myself interested in this movie because of the TV ads.....and let me tell you....the ads may pique your interest....but definitely don't give away too much. This movie was much more than I expected and I loved it. It's set in an alternate time...or universe....20 years after an alien spacecraft appeared hovering over Johannesburg. The aliens can't leave and end up in a segregated slum area called District 9. After endless pressure from the public, the government decides to force them out of their homes and relocate them to District 10....the new facility. Enter Wickus....the son in law of the big boss who's put in charge of informing the "prawns" that they must go and take care of the paperwork. There's also some alien weapons that only the aliens can use. The government wants …

Gore and Sci fi at its finest

BryanFury - wrote on 08/30/2009

District 9 comes off as a very simple yet very effective film in almost all aspects in the last decade of sci fi movies. It almost feels like a cross between an Alien infested Resident evil and Cloverfield. I was really surprised what the lead actor brought to this film, which was a compelling sense of humanism which connects the audience to what this movie's about. To think he's not really an actor, I'm sure he has a lot more coming after this one. Neil Blomkamp should be given more sci fi movies in the future, like a T5 or how about a metal gear solid. The CG for this movie was out of this world and I kinda wished Judge dredd were made or remade by this guy. Overall it was hardcore gore and sci fi all in one and you'll be surprised what District 9 holds in store because it has a …

The New York of Movies-District 9 is a Melting Pot

"Nothing is wrong with it though I am not sure what is so great either." -Alex's Review
He took the words right out of my mouth. There is no way in hell that I could utter the words "I hate this movie." But on the same token, I can't say that I love it either. I can tell you that I liked it but alas, I can't really tell you why. Maybe because it was different? No. Many of its elements and ideas can be compared to some movies of the past. Were the special effects out of this world? No. They were good but I have seen better. There are so many things about this movie that I will never forget but they are the same things, ironically, that I have seen before. It is as if everything you love about movies was placed into one movie, just not as effectively as it could have been. By all means go …

Very Solid and Very Fun

Alex - wrote on 08/20/2009

Yes, this is a really good movie. But I am not really sure why yet. Not too often is a sci movie this interesting or well paced. Usually there are tons of horror movies (why I don't know) and 2 or fewer Sci Fi movies per year. This year is different.

When watching District 9 it was like I was playing Half Life on the PC. It was an amazing feeling, a once in a long time feeling (though not once in a lifetime). Despite all of these great things, I think it will be forgotten in years to come. Nothing is wrong with it though I am not sure what is so great either.

One could compare this two movies - Cloverfield (because it was shot in documentary style) and 28 Days Later (because it was a surprise hit not created on American soil). This is not than either of these.

I don't …

Power to the Prawns

Chris Kavan - wrote on 08/16/2009

Although it has all the hallmarks of a traditional sci-fi/action/drama District 9 manages to mold these traditional notions into something new and interesting.

Set in South Africa, Neill Blomkamp uses his own experiences to craft a tale of literal alienation using extraterrestrials instead of fellow humans. After their spaceship kind of stalls above South Africa the aliens, referred to as "prawns" for their tentacled mouths and shell-like appearance, have been stranded in the slums for 20 years, and the surrounding humans (save for some Nigerians who want weapons) are getting fed up.

The prawns are treated like dirt, so the Multi-National United led by Wikus van der Merwe arrive to appease the situation. In reality, they're evicting the aliens to a far-away camp away from cities …
