A cinematic sci fi epic

The Film Rebel - wrote on 04/22/2010

The definitive science fiction film and one that revolutionized the art that is film making, George Lucas' masterpiece "Star
Wars: A New Hope"(once merely known as "Star Wars") is an visually stunning epice that has broke numerous grounds in film, started a cult following, and has been referenced just about everywhere. "Star Wars" borrows from the old "Flash Gordon" serials of the 1950s. Like "The Matrix" and "District 9", it is so original and yet its interesting to see what films it borrowed from or what concepts it takes. Its almost like a sci fi reimagining of "Wizard of Oz." We have one main character on a quest and he meets numerous other characters along the way.

The film focuses on a teenager named Luke Skywalker. He lives on the desolate planet of Tattooine. His boring life …

The Force Is With This Movie!!

This great classic has so many good elements it's almost impossible to list them all: The breathtaking visual effects, still awesome 28 years on; the brilliant script, which mixed epic battles and duels with matinée-serial-style characters and dialogues; the debut of one of the greatest villains in cinema history, Darth Vader; John Williams'amazing and unforgettable score, among the Top 10 best scores ever...All those things are just some of the reasons Star Wars is among the best movies (not just sci-fi) ever made: viewing after viewing, it never stops being impressive, and words are nearly useless to describe the impact it still has on the audience. George Lucas basically took a medieval story and moved it to a distant galaxy, on weird and fascinating planets. Almost everything is …

A legend is born "in a galaxy far, far away"

"Princess Leia" (Carrie Fisher) is in possession of the plans of the "Empire's" ultimate weapon, and is on her way to the secret "Rebel" base to deliver the plans for study when the ship that is transporting her is attacked and boarded by "Imperial" forces lead by "Darth Vader" (David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones). The princess is captured, only after putting the plans inside the "droid" "Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2)" (Kenny Baker), which is accompanied by the "protocol droid" "See Threepio (C3-PO)" (Anthony Daniels).

The two "droids" escape to the nearby planet "Tatoonie," and into the care of the "Luke Skywalker" (Mark Hamill), an orphan who is being taken care of his uncle "Owen Lars" (Phil Brown) and his wife "Beru" (Shelagh Fraser), who have been taken care of their nephew since he …

A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away....these were the first words I saw in the first movie that I ever went to. I was only almost 4 years old when it came out, so I probably couldn't read them, but never the less these 10 words have been a part of my life ever since that day in 1977.

From the opening scrawl to the Star Destroyer chasing down Princess Leia's ship over Tatooine, this movie, this story, has been one of awe and inspiration around the world. And in my little world, it has given me years of enjoyment and wonderment. I remember playing Star Wars on the playground at Spruce Home School with my cousin Keith and friends Travis and Bobby. I always wanted to be Luke. I actually got into a little scrap with Keith because he wanted to be Luke. We ended up getting hauled down …

May 25th 1977... that was the day that changed the Sci-Fi genre forever. The first showing that occurred George Lucas thought that he had just flopped, and that he was going to be struggling to try to come up with the funds for the loss on a failed film. It wasn't until about an hour later after the next theater opened that he knew the first reaction was just a fluke because its all anyone was talking about!
Star Wars is one of the most influential movies of our time and there are many films that have been released since that either pay tribute to the movie by quoting it, (MallRats, Clerks, Tommy Boy, etc.) or by directly parodying it (Space Balls). While I have only run into a few people that haven't seen this movie, it is not easy to find many that don't know about it's existence. …
