This is not an art film, or a martial art film as has been suggested. Its an epic adventure film. Bult around superb character development, and slices of action. At 3 1/2 hours it never seemed long. That should say enough in itself.

In my mind, one of the few movies that seems to be crafted into a masterpiece. I really have a hard time being a "judge" of this film because I feel that very few movies compare to it. In fact, as I'm writing this review I cannot think of one off the top of my head. I realize that some may say that it is slow paced and at times, but even when I watch it meticulously, I have a hard time saying that Kurosawa did something wrong. I'd be more likely to say, "I cannot find a single mistake, and if I can't find one, it must be good." If you love "films" and care more about it as an art than just entertainment, you absolutely will not be disappointed with this one.

Story-telling at its finest, "Seven Samurai" is a terrific film not because of a handful of memorable scenes or lines, but rather because scene-by-scene, frame-by-frame, it tells an interesting story as well as it is possible to tell it. The story and characters are developed carefully, and everything about the movie, from the settings and props to the musical score, is done carefully and expertly.

Kurosawa. Possibly the first entry to the asian cinema for most of us. And what entry! He was a master. And you'll find his craft in this movie, wich... very easily, can turned up to be the best movie ever made. Ultra snobs says that his movies were mainstream for asia, kind of holywood like. I don't care. I care that you will never be regret when you watch his films. If you look asian films with weird eyes and never watched one before, this is the right place to start. You wont be disappointed.

What a great film! Some of the FX in the film is amazing for the 50's. A classic and must own for any one in to the "martial" art type films.

Akira Kurosawa's masterwork is a journey into the lives of seven characters - each fully developed. At over 3 hours, it is not a film to go into lightly. If you are prepared, it will leave awed.

I was bored through most of the 3 hours. I don't see the big picture on this one, unless it was the crackling, sloppy, non widescreen copy I saw?
