In the House ( Dans la maison ) |

"In The House" by Yojimbo
|
|
A bored teacher encourages a promising young student to write a story that results in him insinuating himself into the life of a middle class classmate for inspiration. In The House is one of those self aware deconstructions of the creative process, coming across as a kind of blending of Adaptation and The Lives Of Others. The core of the story is essentially the symbiotic relationship between story teller and his audience whose voyeuristic appetites are represented by the teacher whose need fo... |

Iron Man 3 |

Having found the first Iron Man passable, and Iron Man 2 abysmal. Iron Man 3 is the best of the franchise, thanks wholly to the writing and directing of Shane Black. Downey Jr is typically great in the role (and his best performance as the titular Iron Man) but I really loved what was done with Paltrow's role, a screaming weakling in the previous entry, her character is wonderfully developed this time around and she's actually a strong character. Pierce, once again playing a wonderful vila... |

Pain & Gain |

you won’t believe it until you see it

Pain and Gain may objectively be the worst movie ever made. Its Ideas are cliché, its style is over the top and almost every frame in it contains something at least offensive if not worse. I for one enjoyed the heck out of it.
I am fascinated by this movie. Director Michael Bay, the man who is responsible for what many, including myself, call some of the worst movies of all time, made this as a personal picture. By that I mean he threatened to drop out of Transformers 4 if the studio woul... |

I liked just about everything about this movie. Though, I'm not sure how I feel about the Rock punching that elderly man or the rape joke that was in this movie. But, I guess if it's a true story then maybe that stuff actually happened. |

Mud
|

Mud (2013) Two teenage boys (Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland) encounter a fugitive (Matthew McConaughey) who persuades them to help him evade bounty hunters so he can get back his one true love (Reese Witherspoon). This was one of my favorite films of the 2013 Atlanta Film Festival, and Matthew McConaughey has another performance that will get him talked about for an Academy Award where he plays the slick-talking, likable Mud. But it's the performance of the two lead boys, Sheridan and Lofland t... |

Pain & Gain

Pain & Gain (2013) Daniel Lugo (Mark Wahlberg) works as a personal trainer. He’s a fairly happy guy, but he wants the good life and he wants it now. So Daniel comes up with a sure fire plan to make all his dreams come true; just kidnap Victor (Tony Shalhoub), a wealthy client, and extort money from him. He enlists two of his bodybuilding friends (Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie) to help. So, what could go wrong? Uh, just about everything. I liked the first part of the film, which has a ver... |

A Very Entertaining Drama
|

Mud is a surprisingly good drama about two boys and their friend named Mud. The movies plot consists of the two boy’s trying to get Mud, who is wanted for murder, together with his girl without him getting caught by the family of the man he killed, who are out for blood, and the police.
The movie is pushed forward by the threat of violence and the danger that goes along with it, but it is really a coming of age story. One of the boy’s parents are going through a divorce, and he is dependin... |

The Lords of Salem |

A deeply flawed, but admirable effort.

If I could give a star rating somewhere between 2.5 and 3 out of 4, that's exactly what I'd give Zombie's Lords of Salem. Flawed, but ambitious. Creepy, but not particularly scary. Visually dazzling, if emotionally hollow. Still, Zombie deserves credit for going in a different direction and showing off his eye for wonderful shot compositions, instead of relentless gore and cheap jump scares. Not up there with his best (House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects, and Halloween II) but also ... |

Blatantly Derivative

Oblivion is basically just a random hodgepodge of ideas, scenes and twists from the some of the most important Sci-Fi films of the past fifty years. Unless the most recent science fiction film you’ve seen is A Trip to The Moon, this probably won’t do much for you.
Oblivion was directed by Joseph Kosinski, the guy who directed Tron: Legacy and he brings the same level of visual grandeur and visual originality to this movie. Unfortunately Oblivion doesn’t have the inventiveness or energetic ... |

I liked the movie Oblivion and would love to have it as part of my DVD collection when it is released, meaning I would like to watch this one quite a few times. Tom Cruise was believable in his role, but also likeable. I wanted his character to succeed in his goal of providing safety to the remains of Earth for a scant two weeks before he can head back to the new home base. But for an action film, Oblivion was awfully slow. It was not dull. It did have a lot of intensity, but the flow of the mo... |
