Yeah, it's pretty corny at times and goes for a few too many obvious jokes. Still, The Princess Bride is charming in its willingness to embrace its own silliness and, at times, it's a transcendent send-up of the fantasy genre. The whole cast seems to be having a blast -particularly Mandy Patinkin in his quest for the six fingered man and the incomparable Andre the Giant.

Not Your Average RomCom

I avoided this movie for the longest time. The title always gave me the idea it was a romcom on the level of 'The Wedding Planner' or one of the other mindless movies made to ruin relationships and prevent women from accepting the reality of what relationships are. When my wife assured me that this was nothing like that, I cautiously trusted her and was greeted with one of my favorite movies of all time. This movie is funny and adventurous. It targets both men and women equally and does it quit...

Barry Lyndon review

One has to appreciate the beauty of the locations, cinematography, historical methods of its era (1700's manner of punishment, weapons used in war, duels, manner of speaking, etc.), period films and Redmond Barry's (Ryan O'Neal) journey/story before investing 3 hours on this. Not as entertaining as The Shining, 2001 or Full Metal Jacket, but definitely influential. It starts with the first Act wherein Redmond falls in love with his cousin Roma. He then performs a duel with English Captain Joh...

A bunch of kids on a tour of a space centre are accidentally shot into space. Happens all the time apparently; you can't launch a rocket without having to plough through all the floating toddlers. The result is a teeny bop version of Apollo 13.

Michael Haneke is always one to push the envelope and Piano Teacher is no different. Isabelle Huppert really gives a daring performance, even if her character makes all other "crazy" girlfriends look sane by comparison. This goes to some very dark places and I'm not sure I would want to visit them again.

Cult Classic

The Princess Bride is a true cult classic and works because it does not take itself too seriously. The sword fights are comical for their lack of blood and gore and the dialogue is often funny and hokey. Regardless, the actors fill their roles perfectly and the narrative flows nicely as a story being told be a grandfather to his grandson. The Princess Bride is not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but it is certainly an enjoyable film that is worth watching.

"As you wish",

When you mix pirates, sword wielding Spaniards, good-natured giants, evil masterminds, six-fingered counts, and the Cliffs of Despair what do you get?

The main story is in fact a story within a story; a grandfather, played by Peter 'Columbo' Falk, visits his sick grandson Fred Savage and reads him a tale about a young princess, Buttercup (Robin Wright) and her servant Wesley, played to perfection by Cary Elwes. We see her treating him quite heartlessly but as time goes on, we see her fall in...

"The Princess Bride" by Yojimbo

This charming post-modern fairytale was adapted by William Goldman from his own book, and it's the witty script crammed with knowing humour and likeable characters that makes it. Technically, it really isn't that great; the direction from Rob Reiner is flat and lacklustre as he clearly has no idea how to handle action. The score is also appalling; it sounds like someone was just making it up as they went on an 80s home organ. But there are so many funny, quotable lines and fun characters it har...

Not as fun as shining, but it is drama

I remeber when i saw this film for first time i enjoyed its beautiful pictures, more comic than dramatic atmosphere of first part and greatly shot battles. Ending did not really touched me. Next time when i saw it it had whole new dimension. It was great. Drama went to new level. I was thinking if Griffith and Welles have taken cinema to new level than Kubrick took cinema on 10 new levels, because this good drama wasnt made after it.
What is so great about drama in this film? Drama in this mov...

I'm going to have to agree with Gabe on this one - as a kid, I'm sure it was awesome watching those kids in space, but somehow I just don't think it holds the same place as say, The Goonies or Princess Bride. I don't think it would have aged as well at all.
