Tenderness in Uexpected Romance

I’ve seen Guillermo del Toro’s latest phantasy drama, cold war era period piece, interspecies romance: a delightful celebration of love in and of itself. Emerging as an early Oscar frontrunner, the film tells the story of Elisa (Sally Hawkins), a mute woman who works at a government’s facility as a cleaning lady in the early 1960s. She discovers that in the facilities a marine creature (Doug Jones) of an unknown species is being held captive. Colonel Richard Strickland (Michael Shannon) pretend...

Darkest Hour - Review

"Will you stop interrupting me while I am interrupting you!"

'Darkest Hour' is this years 'Lincoln'. Both films star a well respected actor who is unrealizable and brings one of the best performances of their career. History sure dose repeat itself.

It's quite shocking more actors have played Winston Churchill than James Bond, Spider-Man, and Doctor Who. Lets not forget we had another movie about Winston Churchill early this year named 'Churchill' staring Brain Cox. However, my ...

When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do

"Roman J. Israel, Esq." explores the inner struggle of an activist, tempted by the appeal of the high life. Roman (Denzel Washington) is part of a two-man legal firm and is thrust into the lead role once the founder is medically incapacitated. Roman is used to doing all of the work behind the scenes and has a rough go of it when he is asked to represent his firm’s clients in court. He draws contempt of court fines by judges and a barrage of foul worded insults from a newbie activist. His su...

The Florida Project - Review

LIFF31 2017 #4

"I can always tell when adults are about to cry".

"The Florida Project" is a bright candy-lit look on Florida lifestyle, which has it's dark moments underneath. The beautiful, but trashy Disney parody is presented from a little girls point of view. Every serious or traumatic event are completely overshadowed by a child; we only see it in the background. To be honest, a lot of the scenes in the film reminded me of "Moonlight". Little details tha...

Stylish remake of the classic mystery film.

Kenneth Branagh directs and stars as the famous detective Hercule Poirot. It's a beautifully filmed and lavish looking movie. The costume design and scenery is a feast for the eyes.
To sum up the plot without spoilers, the script is similar to the 1974 adaptation with a few tweaks here and there. Its faithfulness makes it adequate but it's not as fresh as the original movie. I did appreciate the odd chase scene that occurred and some effective visual changes.
The ensemble cast is mostly go...

A Laugh Riot of Epic Proportions

The new Thor is a whole lot of fun - in fact, I would wager to say that director Taika Waititi has truly created the first Marvel comedy - as Ragnarok has just as many funny moments as action. But that comedy comes at one big expense - depth, because as much as I did enjoy watching Ragnarok unfold, I couldn't help but feel it was wasting its new talent, especially Cate Blanchett and Karl Urban. Still, if you want a good time, you won't find much better than the new Thor - and it is head and sho...

Call Me by Your Name - Review

LIFF31 2017 #2

"Nature has cunning ways of finding our weakest spot."

There is no doubt how incredibly beautiful "Call Me By Your Name" is. Putting aside your age and sexuality, the film offers more than romance. It's not sad or tragic, but a peaceful one. It's all about falling in love. What's been said by many will be repeated here, so none of this is gonna be new to you, because it's all true.

Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, and newcomer Timothée Chalamet all de...

The God of Thunder returns in epic fashion!

A dazzling and splashy 80s-styled comic book adventure that blows both the previous Thor movies clean out of the water.

Director Taika Waititi is better known for his offbeat comedies and like James Gunn with Guardians of the Galaxy, it's evident in Thor: Ragnarok as well. With colorful special effects, cheeky humor, and quirky side-characters, the movie zips along from one action scene to the next. All the while, it opens the Marvel Cinematic Universe further for future adventures.
