Finally got to see a true Western classic beloved by many fan and critics (namey the late great Ebert) alike. A film that mainly focuses on the bossy Thomas Dunson (John Wayne) and the partial swift quick drawer Matthew Garth (adult Montgomery Clift). Some minor observations that hamper the rating would be its length (for such a simple plot), lack of clarity with the messages shown regarding their journey, too many subplots/characters which lack depth and the love angle with Tess Millay (Joanne Dru). I believe the character of Tess could have been inserted earlier to keep things light since she does make an impact in the fitting conclusion. John Wayne was pretty solid in his portrayal of a man transformed because of circumstances and Clift was wonderful as well. The cinematography and score were also highlights of the film. Screenplay was well written with provocative lines: "Well, I don't like to see things goin' good or bad. I like 'em in between," "Wherever they go, they'll be on my land. My land. We're here and we're gonna stay here." and "There are only two things that are better than a gun: a Swiss watch and a woman from anywhere. Ever had a good... Swiss watch?" Red River had some really good action sequences and realistic drama, it does however lacks that certain spark in order for you to re-watch or even call it a classic. Popular for critics, unfortunately not highly for this one.
