The Conformist review

Marcello Clerici (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Giulia plan on their wedding. In a flashback, Lino (Pierre Clémenti), a chauffeur, gives Marcelo a haunting memory. Marcello is tasked to eliminate Professor Quadri. The score utilized were applicable, Trintignant’s portrayal was likable and its haunting conclusion seems to be fitting. The topics on fascism, social acceptance, normalcy, fate, love, cowardice and fear of political agenda were well presented. Direction and cinematography were gorgeous and picturesque. Screenplay was impressive with lines: "You've got try to understand women." "Do you believe at all in fate?" "I'm going to build a life that's normal." "Fight or be beaten." and "Don't hurt us please." Overall, The Conformist tackles on sensitive political and life related messages while not being too preachy. Spectacular direction but replay value may not be that high since the details made the pace a bit slow. If one is in the mood for a political drama that has thrilling film-noir elements, this is for you.
