Monsieur Verdoux

Monsieur Verdoux review
Daniel Corleone - wrote on 06/10/13

"Life is beyond reason." Monsieur Verdoux (Charles Chaplin) supports his crippled wife and child. He meets a girl just released from prison for larceny. Inspector Morrow visits Verdoux, who later marries Marie. A brilliant screenplay though it was impossible to comprehend how people can speak like Verdoux. So many memorable smart quote such as: "Nothing is permanent in this world. Not even our troubles." and "Careful little one, you might be stepped on." - Verdoux "I suppose, if the unborn knew of the approach of life, they'd be just as terrified." and "It's a blundering world and a very sad one, yet kindness can make it beautiful." - The girl. One of a few qualms this reviewer has were the girl he coincidentally meets three times in various places and yet without divulging a name. The boat scene felt illogical as well since the lady seemed too stupid. Still, Monsieur Verdoux is a well constructed dark comedy which delves into the financial crisis, crime, sacrifice for family and destiny.
