The Grapes of Wrath review
Daniel Corleone - wrote on 04/13/13

"Human being wouldn't live the way they do. Human being couldn't stand to be so miserable." Touching, funny, realistic and a masterpiece. Tom (Fonda) gets paroled and goes looking for his parents. Excellent screenplay with lines from Casy - "I ain't so sure o' things.""Some things folks do is nice and some ain't so nice, and that's all any man's got a right to say." Muley - "Ever'body got to get off." and "That's what make it our'n, bein' born on it,...and workin' on it,...and and dying' on it!" Ma - "They hurt you and you get mad...and then you get mean...and they hurt you again...and you get meaner, and meaner till you ain't no boy or no man any more, but just a walkin' chunk a mean-mad." and from Tom - "Not much but we had it."

Spectacular performances from Jane Darwell and Henry Fonda. One of the best films on the depression, poverty, abuse, manipulation of people and lack of moral decency. It's themes of surviving for the family, difficulties of finding employment, owning lands of others, unfair labor practices and wages still proves to be prevalent and applicable for companies no matter how big or small. The direction, settings, cinematography and score were spotless. The Grapes of Wrath not only boasts universal messages but also showcases one of the best screen mothers onscreen. Her line just brims of optimism - "But we keep a-comin'. We're the people that live. Can't nobody wipe us out. Can't nobody lick us. We'll go on forever, Pa. We're the people."
