"l'm afraid she'll never be happy here on earth." Touching, unexpected, realistic, funny and brilliant. One of the best (could probably be the best) triumvirate of leads in the romantic-drama genre. It is rare to show realistic and the authenticity of friendship on film, this movie makes you jealous of the leads relationship if one doesn't have a long time friend to hang-out or write to. A friendship ensues between an introvert Austrian writer Jules (Oskar Werner) and an outgoing Jim (Henri Serre). The pair encounter a lively Catherine (Jeanne Moreau), who is married by Jules. Jim secretly yearns for her even when Jules has a family. Numerous women have been connected with Jules and Jim, but none as memorable as Catherine.

The skillful direction, honest performances, enticing soundtrack and intelligent screenplay were faultless. Best lines include: "We played with life and lost." from Jim, "But not this one, Jim. Okay?" "Our friendship plays a major role." from Jules and "You said, "I love you," I said, "Wait." I was going to say, "Take me," you said, "Go away." from Catherine. A bountiful of messages presented such as authentic friendship, jealousy, high expectations/ideals of love, perceptions of women, dating, lack of contentment, difficulties of marriage, rejection and tragedy. Though Catherine is not on the films title, she is the reason for the best friends to keep in touch. Jules and Jim (Jules et Jim) is a well produced picture that is still relatable despite it's age. One of the best love triangles portrayed in cinema.
