American History X review

“Hate is baggage.” The story revolves around brothers Derek Vinyard (Norton) and Daniel "Danny" Vinyard (Furlong). Viewing this again after several years of seeing this picture. A powerful realistic film about bad parenting, hatred, racism, society’s indignation's, brotherhood, family and reformation. Probably one of the best prison related flicks produced. Two stories within the story were well presented. Usage of black and white, flashbacks and slow-motion shots were effective. Screenplay was never pretentious with excellent lines: “Then everything gets complicated” – Derek, “Life’s too short to be pissed all the time” – Danny and “Has anything you’ve done made your life better?” – Dr. Sweeney. Norton displays one of his best acting while Furlong a solid support, which makes the movie more enjoyable. Cinematography was gorgeous while the score endearing. The whole premise and picture never seems dated, highly significant and provocative. If Requiem for a Dream represents addiction of drugs, Shame for sex, this is definitely for racism. American History X, much like life in general, is tragic and beautiful at the same time. An underrated classic that is moving despite repeat viewings.
