Griffin Mill (Tim Robbins) is a studio executive who dates Editor Bonnie Sherow (Cynthia Stevenson) and receives threatening postcards. Mill suspects disgruntled writer is David Kahane (Vincent D’Onofrio) and talks to his girlfriend June Gudmundsdottir (Greta Scacchi). David and Griffin converse in a bar after coming from a theater where The Bicycle Thief was shown. A murder occurs because tempers fly. The murderer walks away with possible evidence. Griffin is envious of Larry Levy (Peter Gallagher), who feels his job is in jeopardy. Detectives Avery (Whoopi Goldberg) and DeLongpre (Lyle Lovett) investigate Mill.

Screenplay was refreshing and the lines were alright: June – “Life’s too short.” Griffin –“Keep it to yourself.” “I would like to start over.” Not that funny but the number of cameos (Bruce Willis, Julia Roberts, John Cusack, Anjelica Huston, Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte just to name a few) did make this critic smile. Various movies were mentioned or displayed such as Cape Fear, A Touch of Evil, M, and more. The Score and cinematography was splendid and artists were sincere. Bonnie's character (or the artist) was not that interesting and the witness picking the cop was ludicrous. Nevertheless, The Player’s themes of Hollywood business, murder, justice and morals were portrayed.
