An artistic picture with hidden symbolism's it was still not as solid as the director’s first effort. Pilot Abilene, a war veteran in Iraq, narrates that America is in a brink of Anarchy. World War III had begun. Action star Boxer Santaros (Johnson) had vanished; his memory was erased after being discovered. . U.P.U.2 officer Taverner is abducted while his half-brother who is part of the neo-Marxists impersonates him. Nana Mae Frost and Bobby her husband manage USIdent. The neo-Marxists have plans of eliminating USIdent.

The flaws would include the mediocre acting, scattered plot, the song number of Timberlake and dance sequences with Johnson were a definite turn-off. Nevertheless, it had inner depth with the following lines from: Zora – “Sometimes a dream can turn into a nightmare in just a dime.” Ronald Taverner – “We act like concerned citizens.” Krysta Lynn Kapowski – “Violence is a big problem in our society today.” The film displayed a parody on elections, female supremacy, the apocalypse, civil liberties, obsession with celebs, and poking fun at pop icons. The humor was alright depending on your taste and special effects dazzling. Picking a great soundtrack is one of the director's gift as well as his camera movements. Some Donnie Darko references include the time explanations, bloody eye and dance moves in the near conclusion. Southland Tales maybe mediocre to most critics, it is however a far better movie than most dark comedies though which lacks intellectual script. If this were only structured better with a more professional cast rather than celebrities from a different field.
