The Fountain review

One should have an open mind, patience, focus and expect something different from this dramatic movie. An intertwined story of a modern-day Doctor (Tommy), a conquistador (Tomas) and a space traveler in the future (Tom). Tomas is tasked by the Queen of Spain to travel to the New World in search of the Biblical Tree of Life. Tommy tries his best to search for a cure to help his wife Izzi who has a brain tumor. Tom travels and sees a tree where he feels where it breathes life and his dead wife appears. Each one has a mission to fulfill. Hugh Jackman proves that he can perform straight up drama while Rachel Weisz a worthy co-lead. The cinematography and visual effects are distinctive, striking and futuristic.

The film had a lot of topics and symbolism's related to Buddhism (meditation, rebirth, and reincarnation), Christianity (eternal life, faith, and love), humanity, immortality, time and the acceptance of death. Screenplay was thought provoking and score was applicable to the mood of each scene. Wonderful quotes from the film: Tom – “All these years, all these memories, there was you. You pulled me through time.” “For you there is only death. But our destiny is with life!” Isabel – “Together we will live forever.” “For every shadow, no matter how deep, is threatened by morning light.” If only the effects, flashbacks and flash-forward’s were toned down to focus on the plot. The Fountain may tend to be confusing, ambitious and too deep, however its still entertaining because of its honest premise, astounding visuals and amazing performances.
