The Killer review

An influential action packed picture admired by Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and Johnnie To. Ah Jong (Chow Yun-fat), Jeffrey in the English translation, is an assassin who falls for a singer named Jennie (Sally Yeh) whose eyes were damaged accidentally in a gun fight. Li Ying (Danny Lee) find out Jong's actions and tries to arrest him. Ah Jong and Li form a friendship and was ambushed by the Triad. The style of directing was majestic, from the slow motion, stunning cinematography, cut scenes and timely close-ups. Themes of justice, loyalty (Fung Sei), security (the little girl and Jennie) and being humane. Yun-Fat Chow and Danny Lee were impressive portrayals of their characters. Only reservations I have were its believability, a mere 45 caliber was able to make a car explode and a wounded from a gun shot still able to drive efficiently, same for the decent score. Other than that, The Killer delivers one of the best gun fights onscreen, similar to poetry, the balance of violence and story telling was brilliantly woven.
