There Will Be Blood review

An artistic film about Daniel Plainview’s (Daniel Day-Lewis) dark journey in becoming a wealthy but deranged, manipulative and lonely oil magnate. He adopts a son H.W. (Dillon Freasier) and teaches him the business of oil prospecting. Paul Sunday (Paul Dano) informs Daniel about his family’s ranch with oil underneath. His brother Eli (Paul Dano), the faith healer, negotiates the price of the land to benefit the Church of the Third Revelation. Some lines from the serious flick: Daniel Plainview – “I drink your milkshake. I drink it up!” “I'm finished.” “There are times when I look at people and I see nothing worth liking. I want to earn enough money I can get away from everyone.” “You're not my son. You're just a little piece of competition.”

The captivating cinematography, unique screenplay, the suspenseful score, wonderful cast and astounding performances especially from Daniel Day Lewis makes this film a classic on its own. It speaks volumes about greed, religion, power, family and morality. You have a blasphemous faith healer and greedy oil tycoon whose main purpose in life is to be rich despite stepping on other peoples feet. Felt like a modern day Scarface, Raging Bull and Citizen Kane, with a realistic approach in the oil business and figures in the process of clawing away to succeed while being insensitive. Special features such as The Making of featurette was enticing. It was likewise interesting to see how they extract and search for oil. There Will Be Blood succeeds in terms of film making, acting prowess and exhibiting moral decay.
