The setting is during the post-Civil War Spain in 1944. Carmen (Gil), with Ofelia (Baquero), will meet the fascist Captain Vidal (López). Mercedes (Verdú), one of many loyal helps of the Captain, is a spy for the anti-fascist rebels, including her brother. Ofelia meets a faun (Doug Jones), who believes her to be Princess Moanna and gives her three tasks to complete to ensure everything will be intact. Some amazing quotes: Faun – “A long time ago, in the underground realm, where there are no lies or pain, there lived a Princess who dreamt of the human world.” Dr. Ferreiro – “But captain, to obey- just like that- for the sake of obeying... without questioning... that's something only people like you can do Captain.” Carmen – “You're getting older, and you'll see that life isn't like your fairy tales. The world is a cruel place. And you'll learn that, even if it hurts.”

The bonus features on the second disc provide more insight about the film and their method of costumes and effects was really a treat in itself. Sensation performances, elegant cinematography and effects were present throughout the picture. Its screenplay delved into subjects of fascism, pain, free-will (Dr. Ferreiro), realism, courage (in getting the key), temptation (2 grapes), choices (Ofelia’s refusal of Pan to get the blood of her brother), freedom (Mercedes/rebels), motherhood (Carmen) and maturity. The awards include 3 Academy Awards, the Ariel Award for Best Picture and the 2007 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form and have been part of every critic’s top 10 list as the best in 2006. Film’s score was also effective in bringing in the thrilling scenes. I perceive Guillermo del Toro as the next Tim Burton, but more thematic emotion. Pans Labyrinth is a subtle yet dark, entertaining and thought-provoking masterpiece in the genre of Wizard of Oz, Labyrinth or Alice in Wonderland but gloomier version.
