The 13 assassins are SHIMADA Shinzaemon (Kōji Yakusho) is the leader of the group. A war weary, and former Shogun's Samurai, KURANAGA Saheita (Hiroki Matsukata) a veteran samurai, SHIMADA Shinrokurō (Takayuki Yamada) the nephew of Shinzaemon. ISHIZUKA Rihei (Kazuki Namioka) a skilled samurai, HIRAYAMA Kujūrō (Tsuyoshi Ihara) was trained by Shinzaemon. MITSUHASHI Gunjirō (Ikki Sawamura) came from Kuranaga's dojo, ŌTAKE Mosuke (Seiji Rokkaku) a chubby samurai, HIOKI Yasokichi (Sōsuke Takaoka) from Kuranaga's dojo, HIGUCHI Gennai (Yūma Ishigaki) – Horii's demolition partner, HORII Yahachi (Kōen Kondō) skilled with explosives, SAHARA Heizō (Arata Furuta) familiar with the spear, OGURA Shōujirō (Masataka Kubota) the youngest samurai and KIGA Koyata (Yūsuke Iseya) a hunter discovered by the group. Their mission is to bring down the empire of Lord Matsudaira Naritsugu, the insensitive tyrant who torments people. Themes of destiny, friendship and honor were shown throughout the film. The minor qualm I have is the lack of character development of each samurai, a rushed battle strategy and it’s all too serious mood. Seven Samurai was the opposite of the aforementioned, had the character build-up, ingenuity and humor. Nevertheless, the screenplay, soundtrack and cinematography were grandiose in every sense. 13 Assassins is a violent piece of art that shows that we all have choices.
