Heathers review

This is a dark comedy about teenage suicide, having an identity and peer pressure. Winona Ryder has never been perfect for a role than Veronica Sawyer. The Jack Nicholson like Christian Slater plays the outcast psychotic J.D. (Jason Dean). The rest of the cast stars a young Shannen Doherty as the bratty and jealous Heather Duke, Heather Chandler and Heather McNamara was portrayed by Kim Walker and Lisanne Falk respectively. The “Heather” group is popular in Westerburg High composed of elite but mean girls and an intellectual girl who pity the victims of her friends. It started out as an idea to get rid of societies menace, but the killing spree continued and suicide notes have been created. The media exaggerates and exposes the incidents of the high school. Its pace starts slow to make the figures likable or resentful depending on the character. The mood picks up after the first murder has commenced. Some bizarre and funny quotes: Heather Chandler: “You don't have anything for her either. Come on. It will be very. The note will give her shower-nozzle masturbation material for weeks.” Veronica Sawyer: “A true friend's work is never done.” “All we want is to be treated like human beings, not to be experimented on like guinea pigs or patronized like bunny rabbits.” “If you were happy every day of your life you wouldn't be a human being. You'd be a game-show host.” J.D.: “Is your life perfect?”

Heathers does a great job in introducing the characters and quickly shifts to another level untouched by High School flicks during that time. The style of direction and camera movement was really entertaining. Its soundtrack was useful, plot was unusual and script ingeniously written. With regards to the clothing, it’s pretty evident that the period of time was in the 80’s. The themes however of teen suicide, abysmal parenting and bullying are still extensive. Casting was good since the background individuals were effective. Heather Graham could have been Heather Chandler based on the extra features. In addition, Jennifer Connelly could have gotten Winona’s role and the writer wanted Stanley Kubrick to direct it. Everything happens for a reason, the end product was phenomenal and has become one of the biggest cult films produced thanks to video. We all have gone thru high school and noticed certain groups, the bullies, loners, geeks, athletes and the cool ones. The abundant lessons, solid acting, marvelous screenplay and wicked humor make this a classic for the ages. In the words of J.D. on the film - “The extreme always seems to make an impression.”
