Nymphomaniac: Volume I

Nymph()maniac

The most shocking aspect of Lars Von Trier's latest NYMPHOMANIAC is not the explicit sexual material or emotional devastation of his other films, but that it's actually quite hilarious. Gainsbourg puts in yet another tremendous performance, as does the actress playing young Joe, with Shia LaBeouf also putting in impressive work. But it's Uma Thurman, in only one scene, who absolutely owns the film. Though this will never happen, she delivers possibly the best performance of her career and deserves plenty of accolades which she will most likely, not receive. So far, however, so good. There's nothing titilating or pornographic about this film at all, and rightfully so. The complexities of Joe and her brilliantly told and constructed tale takes the front seat. Just like how the characters and many stories of Shortbus overshadowed the explicit sex. I'm not sure yet if this is classic Von Trier, but it's still masterful. (Not Rated- contains explicit sexual content throughout including graphic nudity and dialogue, and for language.)
