13 Assassins ( Jûsan-nin no shikaku )

Takashi Miike the Killer

A rare foray into the mainstream for Takashi Miike and a remake at that. But there's no loss of artistic integrity as the early part of the film examines the historical Japanese sense of loyalty and obedience, which would eventually produce 'salaryman'. Later, the final battle is something to behold. Miike has said he was 'honoured' to work in a genre with such a great tradition, and you can feel the reverence as memories of Kurosawa are stirred. One of the films of the year (2011) for me.
