Femme Fatale (1991)
Femme but not fatal
3.5/4 stars

Brian dePalma's masterpiece, what a pity he had to go to France to make it. The film cheekily opens with a robbery at the Cannes festival with Sandrine Bonnaire in the audience, no doubt enjoying the joke. Meanwhile, in the vaults, there's a lesbian love scene in going on. What follows is a state-of-art comedy thriller in the Hitchcock tradition. Antonio Banderas gives a great performance as a photographer caught up in the chaos as does Rebecca Romijn as the ex con-woman looking to go straight. The film tanked at the box office, but chalk that down to poor marketing for this is a classic of its kind.
