It's always commendable when a film has something important to say, and Bob Roberts says a lot about American conservatism and the cult of personality. Its satirical jabs are often insightful and witty (even disturbing when the film enters its darker third act), and the script and performances mostly compliment the film's documentary conceit. Regrettably, the sincerity and strength of Tim Robbins' left-wing views dampens the jokes a tad, making the whole thing feel much more earnest than it need be.
