Manhattan Murder Mystery

Allen in Good Form

Woody Allen is, for good reason, not often noted for his 90's efforts, consisting as they do of acrid musical numbers and appalling cinematography. This relatively understated, Thin Man-esque farce, however, may promise to demonstrate that, though subject to tumultuous standards, the sagacious wit and elegant minimalism of Woody's writing and direction is not, and was never, truly lost. With a deluge of brilliant one-liners and annal-retentivisms, 'Murder' surpasses almost the entirety of Allen's rather insipid 1980/90's film resume (especially the dire 'Crimes and Misdemeanors') with its simple, unpretentious desire to tell a story (in this case, a hilarious investigative romp).
