Here are my thoughts on the movie from when I saw it in theatres, I found this on my old blog:
The only reason I wanted to see this movie is to see it before the novelty of it wore off. I wasn't expecting much from it going in, and going out I came out with less. It is one of the worst movies I've seen. I'll try to do this review without giving the plot away since it is a new movie and most probably haven't seen it though I don't recommend it.
First of all, is this movie supposed to be a monster movie or a character-driven romance story? The characters aren't developed but they are focused on more then the monster which is what I thought the movie was supposed to be about.
The idea of the hand-held camera is not original (see: Blair Witch Project). I know what they were trying to do with this but for a person who doesn't get motion sickness, I was not feeling so good about 10 minutes in. Note: Take Gravel before entering the theatre. I did like the idea behind it, making it feel like watching a home movie, but what's the point if you can't focus on the screen and when you actually look, it's all blurry? And there is no camera in the world that can produce that kind of picture and sound and with stand that treatment steadily. [ show less ]
I thought that the monster would be a creative, new type of monster, but I was mislead. It's not like it's a reused monster like Godzilla or King Kong, but it's not spectacular. I'll leave it at that.
I also understand the title of 'Cloverfield', that makes sense. But none of the questions I wanted answered by the film (the only reason I went to see it) were answered. Luckily I saw it at a cheap theatre so I didn't have to pay like $9 at the cineplex, otherwise I would of been even more disappointed.
This movie was a waste of time and money.
