The Great White Hope is most certainly an interesting story about the first heavy weight boxing champion who was Africa American, and was hated by many white people because of this and his relationship with his white wife. The film though is not very interesting though because it is far too stagy. Almost every scene feels like a stage play, with the way characters come in and out of a scene, and awkwardly each insert their line for a scene. This film simply fails to use the fact that it is a film, except in the final fight which is well done. Overall though it is weak, and it is made worse because the pivotal relationship is unconvincing because of Jane Alexander's bland uninspired performance. This is a film that wastes both the story, and a pretty good lead performance from James Earl Jones.
