This film is a bit of a missed opportunity. It has a fascinating character of a self appointed Judge Roy Bean obsessed with an actress he has never seen in person, terrifically portrayed by Walter Brennan who is surprisingly charming and chilling in the role. Bean's story and character is interesting but unfortunately the film spends too much time with a standard land dispute story, which focuses on the less interesting character played rather dully by Gary Cooper. It still is good enough to recommend due to Brennan, but it could have simply been a lot better.
