The Caine Mutiny

Great movie, Tacked on love story aside

A good film with an excellent trial sequence and great scenes on the ship. Some great characters are here in fact all of them except for the main character and his girlfriend. There is a romantic sub plot that is far too tacked on. It is not needed and completely unnecessary for the plot. The ship's politics and characters are far more interesting. They all well drawn and make a fascinating story out of the whole thing. Although one final confrontation almost works all the way it fails just a little bit.

Oscar Nominee Best Actor Humphrey Bogart 5/5- Bogart is great as the Caine's unbalanced captain. His unsettled character is perfectly done by him. The character being just on the edge is well done to the greatest degree. He does not make the character into a standard villain or a cruel captain but just a sad man who is not given any help from his crew. The way that he handles the trail scenes is just perfect.

Oscar Nominee Best Supporting Actor Tom Tully 2/5- Tully is hardly the best Supporting actor in the movie, Van Johnson or Macmurray should have been nominated over him. Tully does make the most out of his very limited character and his very limited screen time. His captain is not a complicated character but Tully handles him well enough.
