The Pelican Brief

Too Many Empty Scenes

I somewhat liked the film overall but there were so many empty scenes where nothing much happens. As a result, it detracts from the thrill and fascination, thereby focusing on unnecessary details. At the same time, what I liked about the film is the way Julia Roberts would wear her heart on her sleeves. She played her character with a mixture of sadness and bravado, which made me root for her that much more. I was quite impressed with the way she showed fear when she was being chased because the shadows made her shine instead of dimming her. Denzel Washington is a nice addition to the cast. It was interesting seeing him because he's a lot younger here. Although I must say that his acting is not as refined. Plot-wise, it didn't really work for me because I was lost when it came to who's who. But I was convinced that these people are smart and are living in a dangerous environment where all it takes is a little slip-up for them to get killed. Sometimes that's enough to keep me entertained. If this film had been only an hour and forty-five minutes long, it would've been stronger.
