The Shape of Things

Sharp and Well-Written

I can see why many people are disgusted by this movie, especially when they are not familiar with the work of Neil LaBute. Along with "In the Company of Men," this film is a dark comedy at its core despite the cruelty of the characters that inhabit in its world. It is hard for me to not admire this picture because it is character-driven where dialogue makes up most of the film and its climax is bold and shocking. The transformation of Paul Rudd from a geeky museum worker to a stunning potential ladies man is a revelation. But the person that made this movie is Rachel Weisz. The audiences got to know her most because her character is opinionated and unconventional. It is well-paced and the confrontations between characters never get old; each argument feels like a piece of the puzzle for the audience to put together in order to get a full picture of who they really are and who they claim to be. I also liked how bright colors are found throughout the movie but the overall subject matter is bleak and heavy. Contradictions like that reflect the characters, which truly enhances the movie-going experience. This is a small picture but it is way up there on my list because it does have important messages regarding society. One of those messages is that some people we come across in life are simply poison. It's up to us on how to deal with them (or don't) when they haven't yet decided to strike, and how to deal with the devastation that they inflicted upon us.
