Journey into a soul
Quite simply one of the most overwhelmingly powerful films I've ever seen. The Dardennes have the unique ability to journey into the souls of their central protagonists - and few films travel so far into that area as this one. Like all their recent films, the main action of the film involves a character's moral development, and the suspense lies in that character's attempts to make a correct decision in a bleak and unforgiving world. The directing, the acting, the manner of filming - all make this an unforgettable experience (and one that never loses its power on repeat viewings.) Emotionally exhausting, harrowing, and ultimately redemptive. I am a better person for having seen this film.
