Raging Bull

Scorsese's Masterpiece

For me, Raging Bull will reign as Scorsese's best film and Robert De Niro's best performance. The film's cathartic deconstruction of a deteriorating boxer's career is a spiritually and thematically rich journey. De Niro is front and center, giving every ounce of energy and weariness alike into his performance and his bolstered by Joe Pesci's boisterous counterpart (Pesci's performance is also a career highlight for him, though his turn in Goodfellas might be more memorable.) The film's black and white cinematography gives a stark and brutal air to some of the film's dramatic scenes and the boxing scenes are poetic violence. In all, a film that will make you wince and think long after it's over.
