Come and See ( Idi i smotri )
Apocalypse Now in Russia
Come and See assaults the senses in a way that is not easily forgotten. The film unflinchingly portrays a unique perspective of the horrors of World War II - through the eyes of a Russian youth. The film's constant use of characters breaking the fourth wall by staring directly into or addressing the camera adds to the often uncomfortable feeling the film creates. The psychological horror is captured in dreamlike quality and the climactic village assault by the Nazis is difficult to watch. Not a fun film to watch, but an important one.
