Somewhere (2010)

A Polarizing Film with True Beauty

For the average movie watcher, this will probably be a boring and tedious film. For those with a careful eye, it has moments of true beauty. Like Coppola's Lost in Translation, the film camera serves mainly as an observer in the life of an empty soul in Hollywood. We follow him through his daily interactions for basically the entire movie and the marvel of the film is that, plotless though it may be, the character undergoes a significant transformation by the climax. I could have done without the overly symbolic last shot, but the film is a masterpiece of acting and understanding in the quiet and most significant moments of life. Not for everyone, for sure, but I definitely thought this was up there amongst the best of 2010.
