I loved this movie! When heard that it was going to be put on the big screen I wanted to see it right away. The reason that I knew anything about this movie was because of a season of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" that revolves around the production of this play. Knowing that Mel Brooks had a hand in in writing and directing this movie (and I don't think I have seen any Mel Brooks movies that I didn't enjoy), it made me want to see this all the more. The icing on the cake was that they had Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick as the lead characters, their reviews in the theater versions were amazing, and while I never had the chance to see them perform on Broadway this would be the best chance.
While the always hilarious Lane impresses as usual, it is a surprise to see normally deadpan Matthew Broderick actually able to raise laughs, and display some particularly impressive singing and dancing talent. But as in most such comedies, there is considerable joy to be found in the supporting characters as well, namely Uma Thurman giving an excellent and very funny performance as Swedish aspiring actress Ulla, never afraid to show off her "natural assets" in order to win others to her favour. Will Ferrell is also sidesplittingly hilarious as bird obsessed neo-nazi playwrite Franz Liebkind, and he also displays some rarely seen singing and dancing talent, easily carrying his own alongside the Broadway veterans, and in fact undeniably stealing the show under all other more than impressive actors' feet. Actors Gary Beach and Roger Bart also raise many a laugh as the play's very gay director/star and his... partner of sorts.
I can't say enough about this movie, if you haven't seen it then definitely check it out!
