Review - Mrs. Miniver (1942)

Mrs. Miniver (Greer Garson) and her family lived a quaint, middle-class life before World War II. When war breaks out, however, her entire family has to join the fight in one way or another in the Best Picture winning film “Mrs. Miniver.”

“Propoganda” is a word that sums up a majority of the film, but it's done through a believable and touching story. While they even made it so blatantly obvious as to sell war bonds on the last panel of the credits, the film as a whole works. That all being said, I didn't care for this movie all that much. I wanted to like it though. I really enjoyed the characters and the acting, but it never drew me in enough to hold me.

Garson gives a good performance, and I believe that she deserved the Oscar she got for it. There were also some cinematography techniques that I noticed were really well done. The writing seems really sloppy up until the very last scene, at which point the propaganda is revealed. The problem is that even though they subtly explain why certain events would otherwise seem out of place or unnecessary, it still doesn't change the fact that those scenes seem out of place or unnecessary.

“Mrs. Miniver” is a very well made movie, though I do not believe it is a very well put together movie. The acting is great and the story is adapted from script to screen well, but the script itself is hard to handle sometimes. And as I said before, I just didn't care for it all that much.

Acting: 8/10
Writing: 6/10
Video/Editing: 9/10
Audio/Music: 8/10
Entertainment: 7/10

Final Score: 7.6/10
