A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child

Review - The Dream Child (1989)

When Alice Johnson (Lisa Wilcox) began having dreams that Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) was coming back, she knew she had to warn her friends. Once again, the last remaining person in the Elm Street chain must conquer over evil in “A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child.”

And now we begin the descent into madness as the Elm Street series begins to wrap up. You could tell from the beginning of this one that they were seriously desperate for ideas and that anything would do at this point. Once again we have Freddy resurrecting for no apparent reason other than cash for the studio. As a horror figure, he's not even interesting anymore, rather the movies have become more about the subpar deaths than the fear factor.

Another rather large and obvious downfall is the soundtrack, which, much like every other franchise of the 80s and 90s, gives in to pop culture. I mean, I don't mind the music, but there is no way MC Hammer-esque music works here. They didn't seem like they even took themselves seriously at this point.

One little pet peeve I'd like to mention is that people seem to take death way to casually in these movies. When a character dies, they just sort of brush it off as another killing and go about their lives. This was handled even more disastrously in the third and fourth installments, but it's getting to the point where death just seems like a non-issue to this people. Granted, if I were in their situation, I'd probably be more worried about my own life than one that is no longer around, but I'd still pay respect.

Regardless, “The Dream Child” is just another Krueger mess that doesn't work on so many levels. It's skippable even for fans of the series, but I'd look up the first death on YouTube or the like, because it's pretty neat.
