Brother Bear

Review - Brother Bear (2003)

After Sitka (D.B. Sweeney) died saving his brothers’ lives from a bear, Kenai (Joaquin Phoenix) decided to get revenge for his sibling’s death. Through this, the spirits of the world transformed him into a bear. Now he must learn about love and brotherhood in “Brother Bear.”

I remember seeing this in theaters and not liking it too much, but I really enjoyed it the second time around. There’s a really good story here that goes along with the spirit of Disney. The characters are also very lovable and understandable. You also have people like Phoenix and Rick Moranis (as Rutt) doing voices, so it’s entertaining at the least.

I did have a little problem with acting at first, but it picked up once Sweeney was out of the picture. He sounded like he should have been doing a video game voice instead. I wasn’t sure about the music at first either. I like Phil Collins, but it sounds exactly like what he did for “Tarzan,” and I was hoping for something a little bit different. I guess he just knows his set style and won’t budge.

“Brother Bear” is surprisingly enjoyable considering the movies Disney has made before and after it this century. If you exclude “Home on the Range,” it’s a good last-cel-animated feature for Disney. Of course, then you’d be messing up the order.

Acting: 7/10
Writing: 7/10
Video/Editing: 7/10
Audio/Music: 7/10
Entertainment: 7/10

Final Score: 7/10
