The Flintstones
Review - The Flintstones (1994)
1.5/4 stars

Fred Flintstone (John Goodman) and Barney Rubble (Rick Moranis) were two of the best buds living in prehistoric Bedrock. When Fred gets a promotion at work, however, their lives are changed for the worst in “The Flintstones.”

I was never a huge fan of the original cartoon series, so just watching this movie alone is a bad sign for this review. What’s more is that the movie itself is so awful that I can’t even help but give it a horrible review.

First of all, I know they were trying to make a movie of the cartoon, so I’m not saying it was bad for being so similar to the cartoon. I don’t really see how they could have done it any other way, so I just have to live with what they gave us. The real trouble with it is that they didn’t keep the feeling of the show at all, but rather tried to make as many jokes out of rock names that they could. That’s not what the show was about, so why would they think that people would want that? Right off the bat the movie opens with “Stephen Spielrock Presents,” so you know from that there’s trouble headed your way.

Even The B-52’s, who covered the theme song and appear in the movie, couldn’t save it. Personally, I like their music, so I was a bit disappointed hearing them in something this low.

For what it is, though, they did what they wanted to. They made a movie based on the cartoon and, if only in looks, they pulled it off pretty well. They used some clever jokes involving household appliances that actually worked. I do think they went a little overboard on some things, but overall it was a good attempt.

“The Flintstones” will not go down in history as anything special, but it probably will go down as being one of, if not the first movie based on a cartoon series. I think they did it right for the time, but right does not always mean well.

Acting: 6/10
