Midnight Cowboy

Review - Midnight Cowboy (1969)

Joe Buck (Jon Voight) was a simple male prostitute from Texas when he moved to New York City. While trying to make a dishonest living, he meets Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman), who decides to help the cowboy-clad young man in the Best Picture winning film, "Midnight Cowboy."

Finally, a Dustin Hoffman movie that is absolutely horrible. I cannot for the life of me figure out what exactly qualified this movie for Best Picture, other than existing. There were four other really good films up against "Midnight Cowboy," yet it somehow won. Granted, being good really means nothing in Hollywood.

The story would be fine if it were interesting in any way. I think if they had tried less to make it a money-maker and more to make it a good movie, it would have been great. Dustin Hoffman is really good, however, and Jon Voight is okay too, I suppose.

One thing in particular that I couldn't stand is how they used one song, almost looped, as the soundtrack. They just kept playing Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'" over and over again. It's an okay song, but seriously, enough is enough!

I refuse to ever recommend this movie to anyone for any reason other than watching Best Picture winners. "Midnight Cowboy" is a horrible disgrace to the award and should never have even been nominated.
