Informant!, The (2009)
Matt Damon is fantastic in this movie.
Not everything works perfectly but "The Informant" is somehow unique and anomalous, it's really hard not to like it. The plot thickens and gets more and more interesting as questions are raised about Whitacre's insanity; the story seems to repeatedly invoke suspense novels by Grisham and at a point is a bit similar to "The Firm." "The Informant" has some plot twists, but twists themselves aren't enough to define it; it's more interested in being a complex and in-depth study of Whitacre character. Another peculiar touch is the voice-over narration as Damon's inner monologue, that's really strong. Matt Damon, mustached and 25 pounds fatter, gives an amazing performance, bringing the right tone to a character who could be everything, a genius, a criminal mastermind, an idiot or a terribly crazy person. The pace is a little slow at times but this is certainly one of the year's true originals, and probably Steven Soderbergh's best film since the first "Ocean's."
