Robert DeNiro's performance is enough reason to watch this movie. He's wonderful at inhabiting the off the wall, overly intense, often self-destructive character of Johnny Boy, someone who the audience recognizes is doomed from the start, but nevertheless is fascinated to watch his demise. The relationship between he and Harvey Keitel is real in its complexity: Keitel knows DeNiro will only bring him down, but his own sense of moral goodness and yearning for penance makes him continue to help him. Great stuff!
