The Help

Won't look at pie the same way again

A strong film, based on a very good book. While the plot is mostly known (black maids in Jackson tell a white writer what's it like to be a maid), the real story is seeing how all of this comes about. The characters in the book are memorable, and I have to say that the casting of this film is pretty near perfect, as each of them ended up like I pictured them when I read the book a few months ago. The standout is Viola Davis, who is without a doubt one of the most talented actresses working today. There are some subtle differences from the source material but that didn't bother me, and even if you haven't read the book you'll be fine. In a summer of superheroes, R-rated comedies, and special effects, The Help eclipses all of them by being one of the strongest films of the year.
