Blue Valentine

Spoiler alert - it's sad

The movie that Revolutionary Road tried to be (you see, you have to show the couple HAPPY at some point to feel sorry for them!) is on display here, as we see two young individuals fall in love quickly, get married, only to have the marriage slowly dissolve. I thought Michelle Williams really stood out here, as her character's hopelessness, insecurity, and frustration were downright believable. Ryan Gosling is okay, but he eventually retreats into his standard indie-hipster-quirky character. The director resorts to some gimmicks to try and make things stand out (hand held cam! hipster music!) and the worst of all is the ad-libibng. I think the film would have been better served with a more concrete script as some scenes just get a little out of control, such as the Gosling-threatens-to-jump-the Brooklyn-Bridge and a doctor's office argument that ridiculously turns into a melodramatic screaming match where the characters become completely unrecognizable. See it for the performance from Michelle Williams.
