This movie is a great example of emotional film-making at its best. I watched it again recently, and I was still moved by the story, mostly because of the wonderful performance of Henry Thomas as Eliot.

Early in the film, there is scene in which several unsupervised teenage boys are smoking while playing Dungeons and Dragons. Worse still, the are smoking around Eliot, setting a rather bad example. Compare that to the follow-up scene in which the mother appears; suddenyl all of the smoking paraphernalia is gone, and there are two cans of air freshener on the table. Speilberg is too good of a director for that to be unintentional. What is the message there? This film earned a SmokeScreeners Rating of 4 Butts (http://tinyurl.com/d5q9ow).
